In this 2-hour continuing education workshop, Ofer Zur, PhD, the founder of Zur Institute, will review current standards of care that all psychotherapists, counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and social workers need to maintain. Dr. Zur will outline 23 specific ways in which licensed psychotherapists need to pay close attention to their practice in order to avoid board complaints or civil lawsuits and keep their licenses.
Dr. Zur will also briefly attend to the exact meaning of what the standard of care is based on, and some of the complex issues related to therapists engaging with clients via texting and social media, and some of the main ethical considerations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and the new era of telemental health.
2 CE credits will be offered for completion of this course.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between ethical, legal, clinical, and risk management aspects of cases.
- Identify the three most common complaints of state licensing boards filed against licensed psychotherapists and counselors.
- Describe the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations.
- Identify the differences among various types of consultations.
- List at least three ethical considerations and challenges for mental health professionals arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
About the Presenter
Ofer Zur, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist, Fellow of the American Psychological Association, lecturer, ethics consultant, and forensic expert. He is the founder of the Zur Institute, which offers over 125 online continuing education courses for mental health practitioners. He also has been practicing psychotherapy in California for over 25 years. Dr. Zur is one of the top experts in the field of psychological ethics, applying a non-dogmatic approach to multiple relationships and therapeutic boundaries. He is the author of numerous articles and four books.
