Being A Sex-Positive Therapist In A Sex-Negative World

Historically, most therapists receive extremely limited education and training on how to work with a client’s sexuality concern. Even if they do, they generally only get training on how to work within one, usually pathology-based, theoretical framework. Dated theories and treatments focus on abnormality and malfunction and are based on traditional, patriarchal relationships. These approaches exclude the cultural and sexual diversity of our 21st century clientele. The science and ethics regarding human sexuality is a rapidly changing landscape and it is imperative that clinicians stay current not just on changing societal trends but changing clinical approaches. In addition to the goals and objectives stated below, in this two hour training participants will learn how to manage themselves and their reactions well in the face of sexual diversity to work in the best interests of their client(s), not the therapist’s own value system.
Course Objectives:
After the course attendees will be able to:
1. Identify four barriers psychotherapists have in addressing a client’s sexual concern.
2. Discuss the differences between sex negativity and sex positivity.
3. List the six principles of sexual health.
4. Apply a sex positive perspective and the principles of sexual health to a clinical case.
2 CEs will be offered for this course, that has been approved by CPA.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Diane Gleim, is a licensed psychotherapist and provides talk therapy to help people with a wide variety of relationship and sexuality-related concerns. She has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 2007 and has been working extensively with individuals and couples with their sexual difficulties since. She has taught a graduate level human sexuality course to student therapists and occasionally do expert witness work. She also provides trainings to other mental health professionals regarding sex therapy and sexuality.
