Dr. Maria J. Alvarez is a bilingual (Español/ English) bicultural Latina psychologist (PSY 21594) with training and clinical experience with the following issues/populations: early childhood mental health, child and adolescent psychology, parenting children with special needs, traditional and alternative (gay/lesbian/foster/adoptive) family issues, high-stress families impacted by poverty/multiple-stressors, families at risk for family violence, identity issues including sexual orientation and ethnic/racial identity development, high-risk pregnancy, post-partum depression, infertility issues, the adoption process, grief/loss, depression, bi-polar disorders, anxiety, women's issues, recovery from rape, sexual abuse and/or family violence, immigration-related post-traumatic stress, acculturation issues, and thriving while raising and/or living with a mentally ill child/partner/relative Dr. Alvarez also has extensive experience providing career (interest/ability), psychological (personality), cognitive (IQ), developmental, and psycho-educational evaluations for English and Spanish speaking individuals. Dr. Alvarez's academic training and diverse experiences make her uniquely qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat children/adolescents with academic, socio-emotional, behavioral, and developmental vulnerabilities. Dr. Alvarez's school-based expertise include psycho-educational assessment and intervention targeting learning disabilities, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), behavior difficulties, and a wide range of other conditions that may impede a child's academic potential. Dr. Alvarez's experience as a former educator, training in special education laws, and experience as a school psychologist makes her a very effective child advocate in special education negotiations. Dr. Alvarez has 15+ years of work experience in health centers (with ages 1-90) on diverse issues including: making lifestyle changes to support overall health, improve chronic health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and treating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and chronic trauma related psychological distress/PTSD. Through her work at the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities, within the TIES for Adoption Program, Dr. Alvarez has assisted many adoptive children and their families in successfully navigating the complex challenges of the adoption process while creating a healthy family system. Dr. Alvarez completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of California Los Angeles and holds a combined doctoral degree in counseling psychology and school psychology from the University of California Santa Barbara. Dr. Alvarez has worked for Alliance Medical Center / Clinica Alianza, Santa Rosa Community Health Clinics, Alexander Valley Healthcare, St John’s Family Development Center, UCLA Child and Family Studies, and on the management team at the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. She has worked as a school psychologist for Windsor Unified and Ukiah Unified, taught undergraduate seminars in Teacher Education at UC Santa Barbara, and taught within the dual language immersion programs for Los Angeles Unified and San Francisco Unified schools. Currently, Dr. Alvarez is the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Alliance Medical Center / Clinica Alianza, a federally qualified health center in Healdsburg serving a 60% Spanish speaking population of patients who are insured through Medi Cal, Medicare, or are uninsured. In addition, Dr. Alvarez maintains a small private practice in Cloverdale.
